BOOK REVIEW - Untaken by C O Wyler Untaken is a b BOOK REVIEW - Untaken by C O Wyler

Untaken is a bit quirky, written as an internal monologue which in fact really offers a deep insight into the characters emotions, thoughts and inner voice. You feel you really get under veneer to understand the true character. Actually a much truer insight than usual.

The book deals with some quite challenging issues - belief, relationships, unexpected pregnancy and the decisions it creates. Then the consequences of the rapture ... believers and children (including the unborn), being instantaneously taken, leaving what the world sees as loss, tragedy, death and disaster. At times the descriptions are realistic, not sugar coated, but always decent.

What follows is confusion and searching for an explanation. With all believers gone, the explanations from science, logic and conspiracy theories come thick and fast with none of them really making sense. It is quite disturbing to observe the chaos, fear, denial and ignorance.

It is interesting to consider that, whereas the world view of the rapture and its consequences are as loss and disaster, the believers view has to be the opposite. It is the next phase in what was promised in the scriptures. It should not be a surprise or unexpected.

The author is clever at weaving into the story some of the Biblical promises and prophecies about the end times, which help to frame all that is happening.

It is also an interesting observation as to how rapidly the world may fall into chaos and despair, as the face of God turns away and with it goes protection, hope and kindness...

BOOK REVIEW - The Prison Letters by @mattmcchlery BOOK REVIEW - The Prison Letters by @mattmcchlery

This is a devotional for Lent, taking inspiration from the letters of the Apostle Paul that were written from his prison.

Matt has carefully chosen themes that are fundamental to a Christian life, which are woven together by passages from Paul's letters, bringing a message of hope and mercy.

Each day's reading has a short explanation of the passage, it's context and the relevance to our lives now. It is rounded off with a prayer to encourage further contemplation.

Matt's teaching is easy to follow, practical and applicable, offering helpful thoughts each day that will challenge our thinking and behaviours. He also includes some references for further Bible reading and some questions at the end of each week that are helpful to get you thinking further.

It highlights how, even 2000 years on, the teaching in Paul's letters is valid for us now and is a great choice for a devotional.

BOOK REVIEW - Touch The Earth by @d.jacksonpoetics BOOK REVIEW - Touch The Earth by @d.jacksonpoetics

This is a truly powerful collection of poems, thought provoking, poignant and hard hitting.

There is an honesty in the writing that cuts through the noise and excuses like a sharp knife. The words are so well crafted by someone who seems to be well read, thus well trained, as well as gifted.

At the start of each poem is a Bible verse, following the Gospel of Luke from start to finish, each offering inspiration for the writing. It provides a theme or concept that sparks the author's imaginative response, framed by the context of his life. I would certainly advise reading the verse before the poem, to offer additional insight into each piece. It is as though Drew has created a new genre of Bible study.

Reading the poems I felt like I needed more. They cry out to be performed, by a skilled actor who can really communicate their depth of meaning and emotion. Some reminded me of rap music lyrics, not an arena I know much about but one that I imagine draws out the emotion and power of the words.

So I then looked up Drew Jackson on YouTube and social media, I found some videos of him delivering some of his pieces... I recommend you do the same, it is well worth it.

Writing poetry is a skill I so admire, being able to refine language to a few words that communicate so much more than prose, and still make it beautiful. When coupled with the themes of faith, life, politics, community and social issues, inspired by the Bible and created by a gifted wordsmith, the works of Drew I find quite inspiring...

BOOK REVIEW - Long Way Gone by Charles Martin Thi BOOK REVIEW - Long Way Gone by Charles Martin

This novel is engaging from the offset as we begin a journey of discovering the main character's fascinating back story.

It is a loose reworking if the story of the Prodigal Son, through the eyes of the son who is the most amazing character. The book has music, and worship, at its heart so songs are interwoven through the text as a score. His journey of discovery brings him to a place where he knows that the heart and purpose of his music is to worship.

He has a life of adventure, poor decisions and tragedy, that makes for a great tale to tell. A tale in which many truths are learned the hard way. Over-arching his story is that of his father, showing a father's love so profound and powerful that nothing would sway him from loving his son.

Ultimately the story ends in repentance, redemption, healing of the body, soul and spirit, which is exactly what happens when you turn back to the Father.

It is a beautiful story, with the essence of the Biblical parable at its core.
The writing is moving and emotional, engaging the reader fully in the story.

Especially touching are the descriptions of how music works to reach parts of our soul and spirit that words often cannot.

BOOK REVIEW - Truly, truly, I say to you by @adamr BOOK REVIEW - Truly, truly, I say to you by @adamramsey_

This is a devotional going through the book of John, in 42 parts making it ideal for Lent.

As well as the usual format for a devotional, a scripture, commentary and prayer, it also features some content from the infamous 19th century preacher Charles Spurgeon.

This has been carefully selected from his enormous body of work. Spurgeon's powerful words round off each section with fine examples of his ability to cut to the heart of a topic. They are like treasure.

In addition the author draws on many quotes from other theologians that adds to the depth of content.

The commentary from Adam is thought provoking, clear, full of wisdom and always Gospel-focussed. His words are motivating, stirring, encouraging and edifying, and will take the reader on a journey through Lent that leads to the foot of the cross.
